【題目】 How much do you know about Earththe planet that we live on? Our knowledge of Earth has been developing since ancient times. However, many puzzles () about Earth remain unsolved. Live Science has published a list of the eight biggest mysteries about Earth. Let’s look at some of them.

Where did water come from?

When it first came into being 4.5 billion years ago, Earth was a dry rock. So where did all of our water come from? Scientists think that it might have arrived in the form of ice by an asteroid (小行星) from outer space that hit our planet. But this idea has not been confirmed (證明) because there is very little related evidence(相關證據) to be studied.

What’s in the core (地核)?

Scientists used to study meteorites (隕石) as small examples of Earth, believing that Earth’s core was made of iron and nickel (). However, a later study in the 1950s proved this way to be wrong because it found that Earth would be too light to provide gravity (引力) if its core contained only iron and nickel. Today, scientists continue to bring forward different ideas, but none have been confirmed.

How was the moon born?

Scientists have found that the chemical compositions (成分) of Earth and the Moon are very similar. That suggests that the Moon actually came from Earth. For example, it could be a piece of Earth that separated when Earth hit another planet. It is also possible that when Earth first came into being, it spun (旋轉) very fast and threw off enough molten (熔化的) rock to later form the Moon.

A.How Earth came into being.

B.Where Earth’s water came from?

C.How the moon was formed?

D.Unexplained mysteries about Earth.

2What do we know about where water may come from?

B.Earth’s water may come from a small planet that hit Earth.

C.We don’t know where water came from.

D.There is lots of evidence that tells us where water came from.

3What does the underlined phrase “bring forward” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.CheckB.Raise

C.ImproveD.Receive

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Scientists used to believe Earth’s core was made of meteorites.

B.A study in the 1950s proved that Earth’s core is made of iron and nickel.

C.The moon and Earth are made of similar materials.

D.Three possibilities of where the Moon came from are mentioned.

本文是一篇說明文,文章主要講述了有關地球的幾個謎團:1.地球的水是怎么來的?2.地核里有什么?3.月球是如何誕生的?針對這幾個謎團,作者進行了簡單的闡述。

1主旨大意題。根據第一段“Live Science has published a list of the eight biggest mysteries about Earth. Let’s look at some of them.”可知本文主要講述了有關地球的未解之謎。故選D。

2細節(jié)理解題。根據“Scientists think that it might have arrived in the form of ice by an asteroid (小行星) from outer space that hit our planet.”可知地球上的水可能來自撞擊地球的一顆小行星。故選B。

3詞義猜測題。check檢查; raise提出; improve改善; receive接收;根據“Scientists …believing that Earth’s core was made of iron and nickel ().”

根據“Scientists used to study meteorites (隕石) as small examples of Earth, believing that Earth’s core was made of iron and nickel ().”可知A選項錯誤;根據“However, a later study in the 1950s proved this way to be wrong”可知B錯誤;根據“Scientists have found that the chemical compositions (成分) of Earth and the Moon are very similar.”可知C正確;根據“That suggests that the Moon actually came from Earth. ”和“It is also possible that when Earth first came into being”可知只提出兩種可能,故D錯誤。故選C。

【題目】 Oct 31, 2013 wasn’t just another Halloween for me. While I was driving home, a vehicle struck my new car from behind, with a blow that sent me into the busy road. I fought hard to open my eyes for a second, but I lost consciousness (知覺).

After I was taken to hospital, the doctors told me I wasn’t going to be able to move anything from my neck down.

I had lost the use of almost every muscle and was very weak.

But at the rehab centre (康復中心), I saw a glimpse of hope and was inspired by other patients with injuries like mine.

The first year was slow and I didn’t see much progress. My head felt like a heavy ball and I couldn’t hold it up, and my blood pressure would drop all the time.

And while the idea of walking or even standing was out of the question, I sure did try.

Six months later, I was finally given the green light to return home.

However, that’s when the reality of the situation became clear to me.

I realized that my life was so different. I was unable to use a phone, and unable to feed or wash myself.

I couldn’t grip on to anything, a fork or spoon was too heavy to pick up.

I had to learn to be patient with myself, and to enjoy every moment going forward.

I was determined to walk again, so giving up was no longer a choice.

I fought hard on my recovery and still do to this day. I’m now moving my legs and arms on my own, doing things like working out, swimming, and yoga.

All of this is proving my doctors wrong, and is turning the page from the impossible to the possible.

My faith (信念), supportive family, friends, and team encourage me to continue to work harder.

I believe that this difficulty is an opportunity to grow, become stronger, and keep on fighting to hopefully inspire others not to give up.

I learned one lesson from my car accident: Never give up on faith, and never give up on hope.

1Why wasn’t the writer able to move anything from his neck down?

A.The road was busy on Halloween.

B.He had a fight with other people.

C.He was driving carelessly on his way home.

D.His car was stuck by a vehicle from behind.

2The underline expression “out of the question” is closest in meaning to “______”.

A.importantB.hopefulC.impossibleD.different

3How is the writer now?

A.He is still fighting for recovery.

B.He has recovered and runs well.

C.He can’t move his legs or arms.

D.He has almost given up all hope.

4Which word can best describe the writer?

A.Supportive.B.Faithful.C.Hard-working.D.Strong-minded.

5What is the best title for the passage?

A.Life is Not Easy.B.Never Give Up.

C.A Terrible Accident.D.On Recovery Road.
