【題目】 An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you are not sure what to do. Don’t worry! 【1】
The question of whether or not to bring a gift often gives guests a headache. 【2】 Of course, some people do bring some small gifts like flowers, candies or—if the family has small children toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice.
American hospitality (好客) begins at home. 【3】When invited for a meal, you might ask, “Can I bring anything?” If it’s not a potluck (便飯), where everyone brings a dish, the host will possibly answer, “No, just yourself.” For most informal dinners, you can just wear comfortable clothes.【4】
During the dinner conversation, it’s polite to say the food is nice. After dinner, you can help clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you are the guest, your hosts may not let you help. 【5】If the hosts are not smokers, you shouldn’t smoke in their house. And, above all, don’t go around looking at the house if you are not invited. After about an hour of chat, it’s time to say good-bye. You don’t want to wear out your welcome.
A. Remember to arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts that you may be late.
B. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day.
C. When you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home.
D. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room to drink some tea or coffee.

【題目】It was the end of June. It was also the end of my soccer life and even the use of my arm. It was a match against Saugus High School. Before half-time, the score was 4-0. Suddenly I had a feeling that something was about to go very wrong. a voice was telling me not to play at that time, but I had to win!
I threw the ball to one of my teammates, but the star player from Saugus got the ball and I began to run at full speed. I got the ball, but also took the player with it on purpose.
A large player from Saugus saw what I did to his teammate and got angry. Instead of slide tackling(鏟球), he went just for my leg, and got my arm. My wrist(手腕) got stuck and I felt it broken like a weak stick. I was told by the doctor of Boston Children’s Hospital that “It is the worst break I have ever seen.” He continued to say that I should not play soccer for at least a year.
At first I was lost, angry and in pain. But then I learned that I am more than just an athlete (運動員). When I paid attention to schoolwork instead of soccer, I actually did very well. I also had more time to spend with my family and non-soccer friends. Now I am at peace with the accident. My future i bright and I am trying to succeed at everything.

【題目】Peer pressure is that strong feeling you might get to do the same things as other people of your age if you want them to like you. There is nobody that wants to be talked about or laughed at. But regretfully (遺憾地), we can’t always do things we like and have to forget who we truly are sometimes because it becomes more important for us to fit in with those around us.
Sometimes the pressure that we feel involves (參與) unimportant things, like being considered cool or dressing fashionably. We feel like doing things others do and saying things others say. Like starting to drink, because everyone does it, or maybe one of our friends drinks. But we do it anyway because we don’t want others to think we are scared. At that moment all that seems to be important to us is what they think of us, but later we regret the choice that we have made. Peer pressure often makes people take risks and put their life on the line.
So why do we give in to negative (消極的) peer pressure? Sometimes we just want to show that we are independent (獨立的). Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that other people around them are doing. The idea of following the crowd (大眾) influences our judgment (判斷) or common sense. And most of the time we give in because we don’t want to be made fun of or talked about for not doing what others are doing. We also do it because we are afraid of being refused by others or because we aren’t sure of ourselves. Also, we do it because we don’t want to lose a friendship, or we want to be liked by everyone. Those who give in to peer pressure have low self-esteem (自尊), uncertainty about themselves, and don’t have a sense of self-worth.
Sometimes peer pressure can also be good. What we have to do is to learn to tell the difference between positive (積極的) and negative pressure. It is OK sometimes to follow the crowd but we have to recognize when it does us more harm than good.
【1】Which of the following is most likely to cause peer pressure?
A. Our relatives invite us to attend a party.
B. Our teachers gave us a lot of homework.
C. Our parents expect high scores from us.
D. Our classmates take mobile phones to our school.
【2】According to Paragraph 2, we sometimes do something wrong to show that we_________.
A. are scaredB. are independent
C. have great talentD. have great courage
【3】We give in to peer pressure to_________.
A. make others accept usB. attract others’ attention
C. prove our special valueD. show our personality
【4】Which idea may cause us to make a wrong judgment according to the passage?
A. Nobody is perfect.B. Nothing is impossible.
C. Everyone else is doing it.D. Just follow your own belief.
