Did you sleep well last night? Or did you wake up feeling tired? Getting a good night’s sleep requires more than getting into bed and closing your eyes. Understanding your sleep behavior and preparing for a sound sleep can help make sure every night is a good night for sleeping.

“Sleep is a kind of behavior and it is different among people,”explains Dr. Carol Landis, a sleep researcher professor.“The greatest differences happen in the timing (時(shí)間選擇) of sleep and the amount (數(shù)量) of sleep.”Some people function better if they go to sleep early and rise early, while others feel more rested (精力充沛的) if they stay up late and sleep in. The amount of sleep the adults need each night is also different. Some people may be fine with six hours’sleep, while others need up to nine hours’sleep per night.

Landis offers the following advice on practicing falling asleep well:

Avoid coffee and food such as chocolate in the late afternoon and evening.

Finish exercising two hours before going to sleep. Exercise increases body temperatures and makes it more difficult to fall asleep easily.

Don’t sleep in a warm environment. A drop in a person’s body temperature is important at the beginning of deep sleep. People who sleep in a well-heated room may not sleep well.

Catch up on missed sleep when you have the chance. Busy work or busy weekend activities often make it difficult to get as much sleep as we’d like each night. Try taking a 30-minute short sleep during the day before 4 pm or sleeping in on weekends.

1詞句猜測(cè)題!more than”表示“超過(guò)”,“getting into bed”表示“上床睡覺(jué)”,“closing your eyes”表示“閉上眼睛”;主語(yǔ)是“Getting a good night’s sleep”,意為“想要睡個(gè)好覺(jué)”,整句的意思是:想要睡個(gè)好覺(jué)需要的不僅僅是上床睡覺(jué)和閉上眼睛。

根據(jù)“Sleep is a kind of behavior and it is different among people”可知睡眠是一種行為,人與人之間是不同的,所以本段主要講的是人們睡眠的差異,故選D。

根據(jù)“Finish exercising two hours before going to sleep. ”可知睡前兩小時(shí)不能運(yùn)動(dòng),與選項(xiàng)A內(nèi)容相符,所以選項(xiàng)A正確;根據(jù)“Avoid coffee and food such as chocolate in the late afternoon and evening.” ”可知不要在溫暖的環(huán)境中睡覺(jué),與選項(xiàng)C內(nèi)容不相符,所以選項(xiàng)C錯(cuò)誤;根據(jù)“Try taking a 30-minute short sleep during the day before 4 pm or sleeping in on weekends.”

根據(jù)“Understanding your sleep behavior and preparing for a sound sleep can help make sure every night is a good night for sleeping.”及“Landis offers the following advice on practicing falling asleep well”可知給了一些睡眠的建議,可推測(cè)出本文主要是如何有一個(gè)好的睡眠,故選C

Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants. It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature.

Suddenly it was announced that the “empty” land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil(土壤)would be covered with extra grounds.

When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.

Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect(影響)the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.

Andrew's teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign(簽名), who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people. In the end, the land remained a safe place for birds, animals and plants that belonged there.
