George Stephenson was born in 1781 in a poor family. He had to start work when he was only eight. When George was fourteen, he became his father's helper. He spent a lot of time learning about engines. On holidays, he often took engines into pieces and studied each piece carefully. Soon he became a very good worker though he could not read or write. He began to learn the English letters when he was seventeen years old. Every day after he did twelve hours of hard work, he walked a long way to have lessons from a young teacher. On his eighteenth birthday, he wrote his own name for the first time in his life. George invented many things in his life. The train was the greatest one among them. Today when we watch or take trains from one place to another, we will think of this great man ------George Stephenson. | |||||||||||

George was very stingy (吝嗇的). He hated spending money. Whenever he had to buy something, he always argued about the price and tried to bargain (討價還價), even for the cheapest things. If he wanted to buy a bottle of coke, for example, and the shopkeeper asked for $2, George would say, "Make it $1.90 and I'll buy it." Sometimes the shopkeeper agreed to reduce (降低) their prices a little. "What's ten cents?" they asked themselves."If it makes this man happy, then it won't hurt me very much." In this way George saved a few cents here and a few cents there, and by the end of the year, he had saved several hundred dollars. One day he had a very bad toothache and had to go to the dentist. The dentist looked at the tooth and said, "This tooth will have to come out. It's too damaged (損壞的) to save." "How much do you charge (要價) to take out a tooth?" George asked. "Forty dollars." the dentist said. "Forty dollars!" George thought this was much too expensive. "How long will it take you to pull out the tooth?" he asked. "About two minutes," the dentist said. George could not believe what he was hearing. "Forty dollars for two minutes' work!" he shouted. "That's robbery (搶劫)." The dentist smiled. "You're right," she said. "Thank you for telling me. I'll pull your tooth out very slowly. What if I take half an hour?" |
