This week, our topic is pollution. What’s the answer to all of our pollution problems? We asked two experts to give their views.

Forest Smith is a member of Green First, an environmental group:

Our future on Earth looks terrible. We’re filling our country with waste. We can’t breathe the air and the sea is polluted too.

I visited some relatives recently in a small village. They grow their own food and cycle everywhere. They are not rich, but they are happy and healthy. We have too many possessions. Most of us have more things that we would ever need. It’s such a waste!

We must close down most of our factories that would reduce rubbish and the air pollution. We must recycle more, give up all cars and improve public transport. Another big problem is that we live in big cities that are crowded with people. It’s time for us to give up our big cities and factories and go back to a simple way of life.

John Green is a scientist at a university:

“Things are not as bad as Forest says. We all have a bright future. We don’t need to give up cars, but we do need to invent better, cleaner cars that do not pollute the environment. Traffic will still be bad, so we need better public transport. We should also recycle more. But some things are getting better. My sister returned last month after living abroad for five years. She said, “Our city looks different from before—it is cleaner and greener now.

Science has made life better in so many ways. A hundred years ago, most people died before the age of fifty because life was so hard. We can’t go back to a world like that.”

1What’s Green First?

2Why do Forest Smith’s relatives grow their own food?

3who thinks we should invent cleaner cars?

4Why does Forest Smith suggest closing down most of our factories?

5What do both experts think we should do to deal with pollution problems?

1An environmental group.

2Because they are not rich and it is healthy.

3John Green.

4Because that can reduce the rubbish and air pollution.

5Recycle more and improve public transport/traffic.

1根據(jù)“Forest Smith is a member of Green First, an environmental group”可知ForestGreen First的一名成員,緊接著an environmental group就是對Green First的解釋,它是一個環(huán)保組織。 An environmental group.

2根據(jù)“They grow their own food and cycle everywhere. They are not rich, but they are happy and healthy.” Because they are not rich and it is healthy.

3根據(jù)“We don’t need to give up cars, but we do need to invent better, cleaner cars that do not pollute the environment.” John Green.

4根據(jù)“We must close down most of our factories that would reduce rubbish and the air pollution.” Because that can reduce the rubbish and air pollution.

5根據(jù)Forest Smith的觀點(diǎn)“We must recycle more, give up all cars and improve public transport.”John Green的觀點(diǎn)“Traffic will still be bad, so we need better public transport. We should also recycle more.” Recycle more and improve public transport/traffic.

Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?

As we grow up, we gradually(漸漸地)develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts(財務(wù)專家)say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is the part of our value system and it has a great influence on the way we look after our money. According to our different values, experts put us in three categories(類別). They are: the ant, the cricket(蟋蟀)and the snail(蝸牛).

The ant—work first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they make so that they can enjoy life when they get old. The ant loves to save.

The cricket—fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance(保險).

The snail—living under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans(借款)from the bank in order to buy things such as big houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure if they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

1The meaning of the underlined words “value system” in this passage is .

A.belief of how to manage our financesB.the way we look after our money

A.work very hard in summer in order to store food for winter

B.can make more money if they work harder

C.save money they make for their later life when they get old

D.only care about enjoying the moment by working very hard

3Why do the crickets borrow money?

A.Because they would like to enjoy everything now.B.Because they are young.

C.Because they think they have no future.D.Because they want to buy insurance.

4The writer’s purpose in writing the passage is to .

A.make fun of the three kinds of silly people

B.make us understand the differences and manage our money better

C.make us understand we should spend our own money

D.tell us that we are the same as animals
