Lillian Hanson, a college student, expects to graduate in about two years. What makes Mrs. Hanson different from her classmates is her 1  --73 years old.  She has been studying at college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years.
When Lillian Hanson graduated from high school, she went to the 2  to borrow money for further education. The banker gave her 3  encouragement. He didn't think that a country girl should borrow money to go to college. He thought she should be 4 doing housework or should work on the farm. 5  Lillian Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college.
Mrs. Hanson 6  forgot the dream of getting higher education. When the children
grown up, she 7  again and succeeded. In the class on her first day, when she introduced herself and 8 why she was there and what her aims were, all the other students 9 give her a warm welcome.
Mrs. Hanson finds that the 10  part of going back to school at her age is sitting in class long periods of time. However, she often says she will stick to her dream no matter how difficult it is.

“Mum, I want to make you a bet,” I said. “If I go a whole year without TV, will you give me a hundred dollars?”
“Well, if you can 1 do it, …”
“Of course I can,” I replied, trying to convince 2.
In fact, all this started from my 3 of a picture in the newspaper. I couldn’t bear to look at that boy. He said that he had 4 one year without TV for a hundred dollars, 5me with mocking eyes. It seemed he was saying, “I did it, 6 you can’t!”. I glared at the boy’s face.

I used to 12 reading if there were no 13, but now I began to read and enjoy it. I could arrange off all the pictures just the way I wanted them—my own little TV, right 14 my head!
I’m surprised what I did. I got a lot more from the 15 than just the 100 dollars!

I was the nurse on duty that day. I didn't think there would be any patients. Just then five bodies1at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said2, lowering her head.
But when they described their problems, things got a little strange. Two of the children had headaches, but they didn’t show any 3of headaches at all. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother4of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.
I didn't say anything,5I explained that they might wait for a little while before a doctor saw her. She answered, “Take your time; it's warm here.”
I checked the chart after another nurse had finished registering(登記) the family. No6—they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.
I looked at the family by the Christmas tree. The littlest one was pointing at the television and saying something to her mother. The oldest one was looking at lights on the Christmas tree.

The nurses who felt bored with 7Christmas, turned to compassion((憐憫) for the family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into action. We began to prepare a party for our Christmas8. We needed presents. We put together oranges and apples in a basket. We collected from different departments candies, crayons and other things available that could be presents.
9, as the family walked to the door to leave, the four-year-old child came running back, gave me a hug and10, “Thanks for being our angels today.”
