【題目】 Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, had been one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared in more than 800 commercials (商業(yè)廣告) for the hamburger chain named for his daughter. "As long as it works," he said in 1991. "I'll continue to do those commercials."
Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. "He still won't let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he never had proper fitting shoes, " Wendy said in 1993. Born to a single mother, he was adopted (收養(yǎng)) as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas of Kalamazoo in Michigan. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. "He fed me," Thomas said, "and if I got out of line, he'd beat me."
Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. "I thought if I owned a restaurant," he said, "I could eat for free. " When he was 24, meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as the manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968.
In 1969, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy's Old Fashioned hamburgers, in Columbus, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6,000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $ 6 billion a year in sales.
Although troubled by his own experience with adoption, Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation (基金會) for Adoption in 1992.
In 1993, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Creek High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him Most Likely to Succeed.
"The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave," says friend Pat Williams, "He wasn't a great actor or a great speaker. He was just Joe Everybody. "

【題目】Make Your Own Money
It's holiday time, while it's the great time to make some money. Some US teenagers use their imagination and skills to get more money.
New York tennis player Antonio Rivera, 15, serves as a hitter or practice partner for players who want to improve their skills. "You might think, 'why would a parent want to hire (雇傭) me when there are more professional tennis teachers'?" Rivera said. "But as a teen, I can offer my lessons for less money and give a more personal experience."
Many teens turn their extracurricular (課外的) activities into money-making businesses. "If you're good at something—sports, arts, math, science, English, computer software or languages, you can trade that for money," Rivera said.
Harlan Feet, 17, of New York, is a good example. He makes money by getting rid of (消除) computer viruses (病毒) and maintaining (維護) social media accounts on sites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. He also takes photos of products and posts them online for people who sell goods through online stores.
"Today's kids have grown up with skills that many adults don't like to spend time learning," said Feet, laughing. "That just means money for me." For example, he's found a way to make money by helping families scan (掃描) old photos and save digital versions (數字版本) of the pictures.
If you have artistic skills, there's a market for you, too. Texan Shyla Boehm, 17, makes and sells handmade things such as small bags and greeting cards. Boehm has set up a shop online and offers her skills online.

【題目】 Do you know what makes you happy or do you just think you know? At first, these two questions look the same. If you think something makes you happy, then it makes you happy. You know yourself, don't you?
Write a list of all the things that make you happy. How many of them are fun? Most of them? So if you spend your time doing all these fun things, you'll be really happy, won't you?
Well, maybe not. For most people, fun isn't enough for real happiness, Paul Dolan wrote a book called Happiness by Design. He thinks happiness comes from both pleasure and purpose. If most of the things on your list are about pleasure, that is what you think makes you happy. But you also need activities with purpose.
If you're a student, your job is studying and passing exams. It's easy to do well in subjects you like, but subjects you don't like are less motivating. They're not fun for you, but you have to study them so you need to find purpose. An A in a subject you hate won't help the world. But can you be part of a study team with friends? Each person can study one part until they understand it and then teach it to the rest of the group. The purpose becomes helping the team.
Go back to your list of things that make you happy. How many of them are activities that bring purpose? Can you add any? Remember, some activities might bring both pleasure and purpose.
Now you need to design a happy life. Paul Dolan believes people should "decide, design, do." First decide what brings you pleasure and purpose, then, don't just think about these activities, fill your life with them. For example, you might love riding a bike but never have time to do it. So ride to school or the library or the shops. If you live too far away, take your bike on the bus or train. Get off early and ride the rest of the way. If you go in the car, put it in the back, stop a few kilometres away and ride the rest. Or move somewhere you can ride more. Some parts of our lives are good or bad luck, but we can still design the rest to make more happiness.
【1】According to Paul Dohn happiness is from both ________.
A.patience and luckB.pleasure and purpose
C.subjects and gradesD.conditions and decisions
【2】What does the word "motivating" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
