Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long.1You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous(慷慨的) ; be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. 2

Generousity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.3They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.4So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put youself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.

5But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

A.To have a friend, you must learn to be one.

B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

C.No two friendships are ever exacty alike.

D.Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem.

E.These can be valuable to a friend.

1

根據(jù)下文中“You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you.” To have a friend, you must learn to be one. 故選A。

根據(jù)上文中“If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend's trust.” Good friends always trust one another to speak and act honestly.

3

根據(jù)上文中“Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.”和下文中“They tell your friend what is important to you.” These can be valuable to a friend.

4

根據(jù)上文中“Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.” Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem.

Have you ever heard “You never get a second chance to make a first impression(印象)?” It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true—the first impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person reacts to you in the future.

What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have said your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed(形成) an opinion about the kind of person you are.

So how do you make a good first impression? Being polite and being well dressed is very important. However, the most important way of making a good first impression is your face. Smiling almost always leaves a positive(積極的) impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.

What’s more, smiling and being positive helps you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly. So if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet—and impress—with a cheerful smile.

1What do the underlined words “reacts to” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.Treats.B.Changes.C.Describes.

2What can we learn about the first impression from Paragraph 2?

A.It comes very quickly.B.It is very strange.C.It is very interesting.

3What is the most important to make a good first impression?

A.Shaking hands.B.Dressing nicely.C.Smiling.

4What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A.Information helps you solve problems.

B.There are many reasons to be happy.

C.Being positive helps you find a way out.

5What would be the best title of the text?

A.The importance of the first impression

B.The ways of leaving deep impressions

C.The reasons for leaving impressions

John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.

Dear David,

How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China. I'm having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I'd like to share some with you.

In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飛行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.

Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.

Lastly, I'd like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals — the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (陰歷). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.

If you'd like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.

Best wishes!
