Ping Pong Door Do you want a ping-pong table in your room? But you may not have enough space. Now this door is here to help you. It can turn into a ping-pong table when you pull it down. After the ping-pong game is over, it goes back to being a common door. It was designed by Tobias Frnzel from Germany. Cool idea!
Dog Watch The dog watch is a “clock for keeping time at a rate(比率) other than human time” and was invented in 1991. With this watch, you can know time at your animal’s rate instead of your own. The watch multiplies(乘)every human time by seven, giving us “doggy time”. If a dog lives to be the age of 14, that translates into 98 human years!
Earthquake House Big earthquakes can hit a house, possibly making the people in it get hurt. But Dysinger has found a way, the Earthquake House! His idea is simple. Build a round house that has earthquake sensors(傳感器) in it. If the sensors know the big earthquake, the house is free from its chains(鏈條). Don’t worry. You always remain straight in it.

Have you stroked (撫摸) a cute dog recently? If that dog touched you with its nose, you might find how wet and cold it was. If dogs are so warm and fluffy (毛茸茸 的), then why are their noses so cold?
Before, people thought that dogs had cold noses to help them control their body temperature. But, a new study in the journal Scientific Reports has shown some interesting findings about dogs’ noses. The study found that when the air temperature was 30 ℃, the tip of a dog’s nose is about five degrees cooler than the air. But why is this?
The researchers believed that the tip of a dog’s nose has a special sensory function (探測功 能). So, they did an experiment to test it. The study showed that dogs could find weak heat sources—like a small animal—with their noses from 1.5 meters away.
The research team studied three dogs named Charlie, Delfi and Kevin. For the experiment, the dogs had to tell the difference between two objects. The two objects were heated to different temperatures. Amazingly, all three dogs were able to sense the temperature difference between both objects.
The study also found that the heat from the objects in the experiment “was too weak to be felt by human hands, even at very short distances”. The dogs were able to sense these heated objects from a distance, but humans were only able to feel the warmth of the object if they touched it.
To know more about it, the research team also studied the brain activity of 13 dogs. When a warm object was put near their noses, there was an increase in brain activity.
“From the two complementary (互補的) experiments, we can know that dogs are indeed able to sense heat from warm-blooded animals, and a special region of the brain is made to be active by such heat.” said Anna Balint, the leader of the study.
【1】What did the new study published in the journal Scientific Reports find about dogs?
A.What makes dogs loyal.B.Why dogs have cold noses.
C.How dogs feel heat better.D.How a dog’s temperature influences its brain activity.
【2】Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “region”?

【3】What happened to the dogs when a warm object was put near their noses?
A.They showed no change in their brain activity.B.They had different kinds of excitement.
C.Their brain activity slowed down.D.Their brains became more active.
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Heat sensing ability can help dogs hunt for food.
B.The tip of a dog’s nose has a special sensory function.
C.Dogs are smarter than other animals.
D.The two experiments found different results.

Many people like travelling in mountains now. But what can we do if there is a sudden rain or even a storm? We need to be prepared and keep ourselves safe.
Put on any gear (護具) that you’ve brought
All hikers should carry lightweight rain gear or at least a raincoat in case of rain.
Keep your body moving
Move around as you wait so that your body stays warm. For example, step side to side.
Find a shelter
Look around for a place to get out of the rain, such as a tree, a cave even your tent. If you hear thunder, find an immediate shelter. Staying outside during a thunder storm is dangerous.
Watch for changes in the terrain (地形)
Rain can cause flooding, mud slides, rock slides and slippery trails (濕滑的山道), all of which can be very dangerous.
If you are in a lightning storm, the most dangerous places include open areas, hills, mountains, trees and waterways. Lightning is most likely to hit these areas. If you’re in the woods, try to find a small tree that is surrounded (環(huán)繞) by other taller trees. Hide yourself in the lowest place you can find.
Put down your trekking poles (登山桿) or other long things. In a lightning storm, trekking poles and long, pointy things make a great conductor for the lightning and are therefore very dangerous. Protect yourself by laying these items on the ground away from you.
