He was born in 1902 in Tianjin, north China. Eric lived in China until the age of five. After that his parents sent him to school in England. In 1920, Ericwent to the University of Edinburgh to study science.

During the Second World War, Eric chose to stay. He wanted to help the sick and give hope to the Chinese people. In 1945, Eric was very ill. He had a chance to leave China but he refused. I remember my first project—a small table. I was so proud of it that I regarded it as a wonder. It was beautiful and it took me six weeks to finish it. I could hardly wait to give it to Mother Winters as a gift. She was always strict with us.

As the tables were not dry from the clear coating, the man told us to wait a few days before taking them to our dormitories(寢室). But I was just so happy that I couldn’t wait to carry my table back, smiling from ear to ear.
