【題目】 An Australian dog called Maggie has passed away this week, and her owner thinks she may just be the world’s oldest dog.
Maggie lived on Brian McLaren's dairy farm (奶牛場) in Woolsthorpe, in southern Victoria Australia. We got her when she was only a little pup, just 8 weeks old. We believe she was 29 years old, "Mr. McLaren said. The McLaren family brought Maggie home before their son started attending school. He is now 34. When the kids were growing up, they’d get off the school bus at 4:10 pm and if they were late, she'd be there Barking (叫) at 4:15, " Mr. McLaren said. Maggie worked on the farm bringing cows together until about 12 years ago. "She wasn't pampered (嬌慣) but she was welllooked after. She always had milk--but not too much of it. She loved her milk. "Mr. McLaren said.
"She loved running after the farm motorbike. When she was younger she would wantto run long beside it, so the faster you went, the more quickly she would run. She had the greatest life."
Mr. McLaren said Maggie passed away peacefully. She died in her sleep on Sunday night. "The last couple of weeks I was sad I was going to have to put her down, and that was going to break my heart, " he said. "I'm so pleased she went the way she did."
According to the Guinness World Records, the oldest age recorded for a dog is 29 years and five months--for another Australian working dog named Bluey.

【題目】 The monarch is one of the most beautiful butterflies. It is famous for its yearly migration(遷徙)from the northern part of North America to Mexico, There, millions of monarchs spend the winter together in one small area. This migration is one of the greatest wonders of nature. Yet this behavior has now put the monarch at risk.
Every September, millions of monarchs from the United States fly to Mexico. After about two months of flying time, they reach their sanctuary(庇護所)in central Mexico. Then, in the warm climate of private and quiet valleys, far from most human activity, the butterflies create one of nature’s great scenes. They cover every tree with bright color. The show lasts until spring, when the butterflies return north.
While they are all crowded together, the monarchs are highly weak. If the environment in those valleys was disturbed, the whole species could be hurt or even die out. That is why for many years scientists who knew about the monarchs’ winter sanctuary kept the location a secret.
In recent years, however, the monarchs’ secret has been discovered. Today, the butterflies’ winter sanctuary is crowded with tourists, who disturb the environment. Worse still, local farmers who need more land to farm have begun to take up the area. They are cutting down trees, making it difficult for the butterflies to survive. They should not farm in the monarchs’ sanctuary.
People should act immediately to protect the species’ winter sanctuary. Local farmers must be helped so that they no longer need to take land from the butterflies. Tourist visits to the butterflies’ hidden valleys must also be limited. Unless these steps are taken soon, in a few years the monarch butterfly of North America may be just a beautiful memory.

【題目】The advice to"let go"of negative (消極的) feelings is repeated in yoga classes and self-help books. Now a new study suggests it really brings lasting health advantages. Those who had a hard time getting over daily troubles had more physical health problems ten years later.
If you are likely to think over daily troubles--running through every "what if" and "if only"-- it makes you feel that's a big deal. Maddux said, “You probably find you feel even worse after a night of thinking. If that cycle is repeated over time, it will wear you down."
The study results are based on 1,155 people who took in a national health study. Each day, the people described their feeling changes over the past 24 hours. During the 10-year mark, only 17 percent of the people have no physical health problems, and only 20 percent are satisfied with their physical strength. But those who always say they have negative feelings because of daily troubles are more likely to have the physical problems, the finding showed.
People can be likely to have bad feelings for a longer time for many reasons. For some people, worries or anger could drive it. Many others naturally have a more nervous feeling or are likely to think over and over again. But even if you are born to be negative, that can be changed.
"Yes, it's hard to 'let go'," Leger said. But people can develop that skill through practice, in which you train the mind to pay attention to the present, rather than worries about the past.
"Paying attention to the present, especially on things you are grateful for, has been shown to have several advantages, "Leger said.

【題目】 He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got at his family’s small house on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before the bass(鱸魚)season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and bass with worms. Before long, when his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish alongside the bank and he very successfully lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, the fish jumped up and down in the moonlight. The father looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M. -- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You will have to put it back, my son," he said. “I have never seen such a big fish before.” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “The boy looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by his father’s voice that the decision was not be changed. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
That was 34 years ago. And he has never again caught such a beautiful fish as the one he landed that night long ago.
