【題目】The story of the magazine

1

When you look at the different kinds of colorful magazines in the shops (and online) today, it’s easy to think that they are a modern idea. However, magazines have been around since the 18th century and they have been an important part of people’s daily lives for hundreds of years.

2

One of the earliest magazines was The Gentleman’s Magazine which was started in London in 1731 by a man called Edward Cave. He was the first person to use the word “magazine” about a regular publication. The word comes from the Arabic makhzan or storehouse. His idea was that his magazine was a storehouse, or place that you could keep information about many different things.

3

Magazines became more popular in the 19th century. They gave people tips to help them with their daily lives, and they often had serialized(系列的) stories which gave the readers a new episode every week. Each part finished at a very exciting point in the story. Famous writers such as Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created serialized novels for magazines.

4

One very important serialized novel was Hard Times by Dickens. It came out in 20 weekly parts between 1 April and 12 August 1854 in the magazine Household Words. This magazine was very good value and it was a cheap way for readers to buy a version of a novel.

5

Soap operas on TV today are often similar to the serialized novels. These old stories have often been made into modern films or TV series and they are still popular with modern audiences because they are so exciting.

A. Weekly stories by important writers

B. Magazines are not a new thing

C. The earliest magazine for women

D. Why these magazines are still popular today

E How people could read expensive novels

F. An early example of a magazine

【題目】 In the summer of 2015, Christian Moyer was just another teenager busy preparing for the SAT when he was faced with a question that he couldn’t answer. It had nothing to do with reading, writing or math. Anyhow, it has everything to do with life.

“We were looking at this part about the college writing, and one of the ideas was, ‘Tell us about a difficult situation you have had in life and how you got it over,”’ said Christian, now a 17-year-old student at University City High School. “And I realized how lucky I was not to have any problems in life.”

That is when the answer came through loud and clear. The idea for what to do next came from “Barefoot(光腳) Sunday”, a church event that asks members to wear new or gently used shoes to a service and leave them behind. The shoes are then donated(捐贈(zèng)) to the charity that help people start over - people who are homeless and poor. Christian decided to start collecting shoes for the San Diego Rescue Mission, one of the “Barefoot Sunday” charities.

Then Christian got a tour to the downtown, there he saw some people would wear the same pair of shoes until there were no bottoms or tops on them. He thought what he did would really make a big difference for them.

Christians started collecting shoes last fall. He hit up friends, neighbors and family members for donations. He posted a note on an online social network. His family members put a box in front of their house for easy drop-off. Since starting his shoe drive, Christian has collected 160 pairs. Donating and collecting shoes have given him the kind of feel-good payback.

“Most people are pretty happy to give,” Christians said. “It’s nice because it makes them realize how many shoes they have that they don’t wear, and it probably makes them feel as good as it makes me feel.”

1Christian couldn’t answer the question because ____.

A.It was all about the school subjects.

B.It was a difficult SAT writing topic.

C.It needed some special writing skills.

D.It was something he had never experienced.

2The right order of the following is ____.

① His family members helped him to collect shoes in many ways.

② Christian couldn’t answer one question when preparing for the SAT.

③ The idea about what to do and how to do it came to Christian.

④ Christian got a tour to the downtown and was shocked by what he saw.

A.③①②④B.③②④①C.②①④③D.②③④①

3It can be inferred from the passage that Christian is a(n) ____ teenager.

A.braveB.politeC.kindD.honest.

4What’s the best title for this passage?

A.Giving shoes to poor makes a difference

B.Preparing for the exam is difficult

C.Enjoying a tour or to the downtown may help

D.Making shoes for everyone is helpful

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題

Is it difficult for you to remember things? I`d like to tell you some ways to improve your memory, so you shouldn`t feel upset.

My first advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it regularly(有規(guī)律地). You might review the material two days after you learn it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month you will find that you can easily remember the material.

My second advice is to use a colored pen to highlight (標(biāo)注)the important parts on your book. This will help you in two days. First, it will help you pay attention to the most important parts when you learn the language. It is always easier to remember only the key points. Second, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the colored parts will show you the most important things quickly. In this way, you don`t have to review all the material again.

Another piece of advice is to use the proper time well. First, review all the information in your mind right before you go to sleep. Your brain is working while you are sleeping. If you think about the information before you go to sleep, you might be able to remember it better. Another good time for memorizing information is in the morning because you have just rested and your brain is fresh and clear. So you might also try to review the important information in the morning.

1How long may it take you to remember the material easily if you review it regularly?

2Is it easier to use a colored pen to help remember the key points?

3What is the good time to review information?

4How many pieces of advice does the writer give?

5What is the passage mainly about?

【題目】 These days, the environment is a huge topic. It seems like we’re always being reminded to recycle, or to ride a bike instead of taking a taxi.

However, it isn’t just rubbish and traffic that can cause harm to the environment.

According to a recent study by the University of California, published by the journal Science Advances, fertilizer (化肥) in farm soils is a major contribution to smog in nearby cities. According to the research, agricultural soils make up of 25 to 41 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions (氮氧化物排放) in California. Nitrogen oxide, or NOx, is a major cause in smog formation.

Emissions of NOx from agricultural areas are much higher than we used to believe and could be a major source(來源) of NOx statewide,” the researchers wrote in the study.

Just like fertilized farmland, there are many other things that we wouldn’t expect to have a huge influence on the environment. Take clothes for example. Data (數(shù)據(jù)) published by the World Wildlife Foundation says that every kilogram of cotton takes around 10,000 liters of water to produce.

This means that it takes around 6,000-8,000 liters of water just to create a single pair of jeans, not to mention the carbon produced when they’re made in the factory and then transported to a store.

And even what we choose to eat could be bad for the planet.

In a 2014 study carried out by a professor in New York, US, it was found that beef farming could be causing more harm to the environment than all of the planet’s cars.

So does this mean that we should all stop buying jeans and eating beef? That would certainly help, although it’s not a practical goal.

Instead, a few simple changes could be made. For example, there’s no need to buy new jeans every year when a good pair can last much longer than that.

And when it comes to food, taking the place of the beef in our dishes with chicken or pork every now and then will still mean they taste as delicious.

Indeed, small actions could make a huge difference to our planet.

Unexpected things that 1 the environment

What they are

Fertilizer:

It plays a 2 role in causing the smog in our nearby cities.

Clothes:

Besides a great 3of water is taken to create a single pair of jeans, the carbon can’t be 4when they are made in the factory and transported to a store.

Beef:

Beef farming is surprisingly causing more harm to our environment than all of the planet’s cars

What we can do

It is 5 to stop buying jeans and eating beef, but small action could make a huge difference.
