An American writer, Mr Green once(曾經(jīng)) said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” It is true that everybody talks about the weather. Many people begin their talks by saying, “Isn’t it a nice day?” “Do you think it will rain?” “I think it’s going to snow.”
Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But sometimes they don’t agree with each other. One man may say, “Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It’s going to rain tomorrow.” Another man will say, “No, it’s going to be fine tomorrow.”
People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it’s going to rain, and he doesn’t look for anything else. When friends have a picnic, they hope the weather is going to be fine and they can sit eating their lunch under the blue sky.

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, in fact, it is not true.
Communication is a big problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate well with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap.
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. On one hand, your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. On the other hand, you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Please go someplace to cool off, try to make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then, think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, writing a letter may be a good way to help you.
Try to reach an agreement. Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. For example, Michael wanted to buy a motorcycle, but his mother didn’t agree with him, they argued over it. Finally, they came to an agreement. Michael bought the motorcycle, but he could only drive it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to agree on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show your love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. Because of the generation gap, the values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try! Communication is an art!

Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let’s read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.
(1). Eat a variety of food, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite food. Remember that we can only get the nutrition (營養(yǎng)) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
(2). Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (鈣) to grow strong bones, and milk is rich in it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk, when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar only includes calories (熱量), not important nutrition.
(3). Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat.
(4). Limit screen time. What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies and playing computer games. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time you spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like riding and swimming. Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘錄) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through pop music or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem rather important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures (the opposite of success). JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投籃) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat(打敗) you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to tell when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re struggling(奮斗), even when you’re discouraged (泄氣), and you feel other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country

  1. 1.

Why does Barack Obama mention (提到) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the third paragraph?

    1. A.
To compare these two famous persons
    2. B.
To explain that the more failures he has, the more successful he is
    3. C.
If you want to be successful, you should fail first
    4. D.
To show that failure is the mother of success
  2. 2.

Which of the following statements is NOT true?

    1. A.
No one can be successful without working hard
    2. B.
Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way
    3. C.
Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help
    4. D.
One should try his best to make his dream come true

    1. A.
One shouldn’t ask questions because it is a sign of strength
    2. B.
One should believe in himself though he will face much difficulty
    3. C.
One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times
    4. D.
One doesn’t have to ask for help because it is a sign of weakness
