【題目】Do you have the following experiences?
★When you talk through a park, a noise from the background is becoming louder and clearer. Then you can find that a group of women who are gathering at the side of path. In the cold breeze(微風(fēng)) of winter, they’ re moving their arms and legs to rhythm(節(jié)奏).
★You want to sleep late into noon on weekend mornings, but find it impossible because the seniors(年長者) have been dancing since the early hours, make a lot of noise.
★Sometimes, you want to have a rest or take a walk with friends in a quiet park, only to be interrupted (被阻止/打斷的) by music associated(聯(lián)系/聯(lián)盟/陪伴) with a group dancing. It is really an annoying problem.
This kind of dancing is called Square Dancing. It seems that if you go around China, you can see these dancing everywhere in the public space. Also in foreign countries, Chinese Square Dancing is very famous. On January 14, 2015, Chinese seniors danced on the square out of the stadium(體育館) where a soccer game between China and Uzbekistan(烏茲別克斯坦) was being held during the Asian Cup in Brisbane(布里斯班).
But in Britain dancing in public is not a cultural habit. You won’ t see any age group swinging their arms and tapping their feet in a park. Usually, they just take a walk for exercise.
Most people think that Square Dancing should be stopped. It disturbs people and makes people feel annoyed. But do you know why these women choose Square Dancing?
For seniors in China, to dance together is a way to keep healthy and be social. With most of them old-aged, they have lots of free time to do whatever they like. There is no more work and their kids have left. They will feel lonely and bored after retiring(退休). So the people who want to keep healthy and stay away from loneliness dance together. I like seeing these women enjoy themselves. They remind us of the importance of exercise as we get older. Besides, most of them have raised whole families. Now it is their time to have fun and enjoy some peace.

【題目】Do equations and historical( 歷史的) facts give you a headache? A change in the school timetable
(課程表) may be the cure.
This suggestion is based on a recent study carried out by scientists from Royal Holloway, University of London, the UK. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in math if they studied in the mornings and better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoons.
The researchers studied students’ grade reports, class timetables and absence rates( 缺席率) at a
middle school in Bulgaria over nine years. The results showed that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored about 7 percent higher in tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students feel stressed most when they were studying math in the afternoon. In history, students taught in the afternoon scored about 6 percent higher than when they were taught in the
morning. However, there was no sign that similar patterns( 模 式 ) work for other subjects such as
languages or geography.
Velichka Dimitrova, who did the study, said the findings show that we perform( 表 現(xiàn) ) better at
different times of the day. “In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention” Dimitrova told The Telegraph. “In the afternoon, it seems that this process slows down. On the other hand, history is more suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion,” she said. Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and creativity. This is perhaps why the time of day had no influence on language learning.
Time-of-day influences such as these are believed to have something to do with the body clock.
This is the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep. Some schools in the US and UK have tried later school starting times for teenagers, whose body clocks change as they grow into adults. Dimitrova believes schools should jump at this chance to improve their students’ performance just by changing their timetables.
