【題目】One Bite at a Time
One summer day when I was heading for the teaching building, I met Philip, one of my colleagues ( 同 事 ), who worked in the same office with me. Beside him stood another young man. Philip introduced me to the young man, named Stephen. He told me that Stephen would take one of my classes Introduction to American History. Stephen asked if my class was going to be hard. I felt he was worried about failing before the opening day of classes. We talked about what the class would cover and I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with fear.
Then I remembered a classical dialogue: Question: “How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a time.”
I told him to deal with his work that way — to do all his assignment (作業(yè)) and to hand them in on time. I added that most successful students I knew made a timetable in order to plan their study well.
As time went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. He had difficulty in study when he was in the middle school. Family members, including his mother, kept telling him that he was a failure. He told me that before coming to our college no one had believed he had much potential (潛力).
Stephen didn’t become an “A” student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignment on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing course after course he began to build up bit of self-respect.
Every time I saw him, he would brighten up and say, “One bite at a time.” He told his friends that he was succeeding when he was supposed to be failing. His secret, he said, was that he was practising what I taught him before classes ever started: “Take it one bite at a time.”

【題目】 When you want to go shopping, decide how much money you can spend on new clothes. Think about the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale. There are labels( 標(biāo)簽) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of the clothes. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash in cold water. The label on a coat may say “dry clean only”, for washing may ruin(損壞) this coat. If you do as the directions on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best for a long time. Many clothes today must be dry -cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive.
When buying new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry-cleaned. To save money, you can buy hand-washed clothes. Besides, you can also buy well-made clothes. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that cost more money are not always better made. They do not always fit better. Sometimes less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive clothes.

According to a research by Chinese Sleep Research Society, 38.2% of Chinese adults suffered from insomnia(失眠) and over 300 million Chinese suffer from a sleep disorder.
However, the age of those suffering from sleep disorders is getting younger. Nowadays, over 60 percent of post-90s don’t have enough sleep.
Getting older is the main reason that the middle-aged and elderly cannot sleep well, while for young people, the reasons include not going to sleep at the same time each night, sleeping late, and not having good sleep habits.
How to decide sleep quality
Sleep quality is divided into two types: with dreams and without dreams. Moreover, if a person sleeps without dreams, there are deep and light sleep stages of sleep.
There are two standards of sleep quality. First, whether there is enough time for deep sleep. Second, whether the time of dreaming during sleep is proper, not too much or too little.
There are three simple methods to decide sleep quality. First, people should go to bed at about 10 pm. Second, sleep time should last 7 to 8 hours for an adult. Third, a person should have more energy after waking up.
How to improve sleep quality
★Taking some medicine is one of the main way to treat sleep disorders.
★Sleep disorders usually have something to do with mental health problems, such as feeling much too stressed or nervous. To have a good sleep, people should relax, be in good moods and work and rest regularly.
★As for eating habits, patients need to drink less tea or coffee, eat less oily food at supper and do not eat too much at supper. It is also helpful to sleep if people exercise more.
★It is also suggested that people had better listen to music and read books instead of using cellphones.

【題目】 Some of the greatest problems we face today are the destruction ( 破 壞 ) of our environment. Brown clouds, polluted water, endangered wild animals…. these problems seem so huge.
So my family does what we can. We take cloth bags to stores instead of using plastic bags. We walk where we don't have to drive…
But does it do any good? When I am the only one in line at the market with cloth bags, am I doing any good? Does my walking to stores make any real difference to the world?
I recently learned something about flamingos(火烈鳥) which like to get together in groups of a thousand or more. Every year, when the time comes for migration(遷徙), a few of them first take off from the lake. But none of the others seem to notice. So the small group returns. However, the next day they try again. This time a few more fly along with them, but most of them still pay no attention, so they return again. They try for several times. Every time a few more birds join in but, since thousands of the others still take no notice, the great migration plan is once more stopped.
Then one day something changes. The same small group of birds once again starts flying and a small number more join in just as before. then more. Finally, they all take flight and the migration really begins. What a spectacular sight it must be — thousands of flamingos taking off into the sky at once !
A few can make a difference. Even if you're the one to take the first step, and continue trying, others will someday take notice and together we will solve even our greatest problems.
