Speed reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and WeChat to try to grasp key words and the main meaning of a certain text. With so much information from our electronic devices(設(shè)備), it would be impossible if we read word by word, line by line.
But now people are called on to put down the devices and enjoy reading slowly. Slow readers, say a good reading habit makes their minds more active. What's more, slow reading gives them more peace. A study also shows that reading a novel helps people understand others better.
With the rapid development of technology, like screens, the way of reading is different from that traditional one. We use a wild skimming and skipping way as we look for important words. "The Internet may have made us stupider," says Patrick Kingsley from The Guardian. "Because of the Internet," he says. "We have become very good at collecting plenty of information, but we are also gradually forgetting deep reading and thinking."
Slow reading means a return to a continual, linear pattern(線性模式), in a quiet environment. "Aim for 30 minutes a day," advises Kelly from The Atlantic. "You can spare that time pretty easily if only during your free moments—whenever you find yourself turning on your laptop to check your favorite site, or looking through WeChat for something to pass the time –then you can enjoy a meaningful book." Kelly says.
