【題目】 Are you shy?If you are,you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people fell shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now,scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied(欺負(fù))by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(責(zé)備)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people,it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversations. And don’t forget-if you are shy,you are not the only one.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容填寫表格,每空限填一詞。
Have you ever regretted(后悔) what you did in the past? Anyone around you will have no difficulty in telling his regrets. As we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices. What can we do to avoid future regrets?
Make better plans
If you begin to do something, you need to make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better. You will know what comes first and what comes last. You’ll also know what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. If changes happen, you can have more time to deal with them.
Live a more active life
You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed. You also need to be kind. “Thank you” can bring a smile to someone’s face. Learn to say “sorry” and don’t be angry with others.
Find the right friend
A friend may make your life and he or she can break your life as well. So you need to think twice when you choose a friend. Good friends will always better your ideas.
When you have problems, ask others for help. That little help may get you good results.
Never fear failure
Everybody fails. Even the greatest person failed. We should not fear failure, because failure is not the end of the road. We must take failure as a chance to learn and improve ourselves.
Life is good. We don’t have to live in our past, but we do hope that we can plan better, live better, and work better when we have the chance to do so.

【題目】閱讀表達(dá)
When 19-year-old Sophia Giorgi said she was thinking of volunteering to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation (基金會), nobody understood what she was talking about. But Sophia knew just how important Make-A-Wish could be because this special organization (組織) had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends. We were interested in finding out more, so we went along to meet Sophia and listen to what she had to say.
Sophia told us that Make-A-Wish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. “It’s a charity(慈善機(jī)構(gòu)) that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. Make-A-Wish help children feel happy even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true,” Sophia explained.
We asked Sophia how Make-A-Wish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had wanted to find a way to make Chris’s dream come true --so, with everybody’s help, Chris, only seven years old at the time, had been a “policeman” for a day. “When people saw how happy Chris was when his dream came true, they decided to try and help other sick children too, and that was the beginning of Make-A-Wish,” explained Sophia.
Sophia also told us the Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time. A Make-A-Wish volunteer visits the families and asks the children what they would wish for if they could have anything in the world. Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come true. They do this either by providing things that are necessary, or by raising money or helping out in whatever way they can.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,回答下列問題。
【1】Did Sophia know how important Make-A-Wish could be?
【2】How does Make -A -Wish help children feel happy?
【3】What was the name of the first child Make-A-Wish helped?
【4】Why were the volunteers important according to Sophia?
【5】What is the passage mainly about?
