【題目】 Qingming, meaning clear and bright, is the most important festival in spring. It is also named Tomb Sweeping Festival. It comes in early of the fourth month of a year. On that day, people visit tombs( 墓 ) to honor the dead. They always spend some time cleaning the tomb area. They usually plant some trees near the tombs and decorate them with fresh flowers. But it’s not just a day honoring the dead. It is also a good time to celebrate the coming of spring.
With the coming of spring, nature wakes up, dressing the world in green. Birds begin to build houses for their babies. In forests and fields, many animals have babies at this time of the year. Days begin to get longer and weather get warmer. In short, everything is new, clean and fresh. 【題目】 There is an old Chinese saying, “If someone gives you a little drop of water, you should return a spring of water.” That means if someone helps you a bit, you should remember it and thank them gratefully (感激地) in return.
We should live in a world of gratitude. We should prove it with actions, not just words. We thank people who hurt us, because they teach us important things. We thank people who give us up, because we learn how to be independent. We thank people who are selfish (自私的), because we learn the importance of being kind. We thank our parents. They work hard all the time in order to give their sons and daughters a better life. They cook meals for us; they do the chores for us; they always give us food and clothes; they teach us what is right and what is wrong. We thank our teachers who give us dreams. But tea is not native to Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. Tea first arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time, British ships were exploring the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea was available to buy. However, this was only available to the rich.

In the 1800s tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. This includes drinking tea with a snack around 4 p.m. to avoid
feeling hungry. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea dropped a lot as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms-shops where you could buy and drink tea-started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and social activities in these places. At the start of the 20th century, Englishmen began to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Kettles (燒水壺) became necessary in every kitchen.

The young man was also interested in the house. He decided to get off at the next station and make his way to the house. The owner of the house told him that he was trying to sell the house, but no one would buy it. The young man decided to buy the house right then and there for $30,000. He used it for advertising (做廣告), as the house faced the railway bend (彎道). The train had to slow down at the bend, giving the passengers plenty of time to look at the house.
The young man went to several big companies and explained the advantages of placing advertisements on the side of the house. Finally, one company agreed. The young man was paid $180,000 for three years of advertising.

【題目】 It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地) written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I realized that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. About two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit (承認)here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth!
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am surprised that 58 percent said they had never done so).
【1】What does the underlined word “l(fā)iar” in the first paragraph mean according to the context?
A.A bookwormB.A man who tells lies
C.A man who hates readingD.A man who has many books
【2】How did the author find his friend a book liar?
A.By judging his manner of speaking.B.By looking into his background.
C.By mentioning a famous name.D.By discussing the book itself.
【3】Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?
A.Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.
B.42% of people pretended to have read 1984.
C.The author admitted having read 9 books.
D.Dreams From My Father is hardly read.
【4】By lying about reading, a person hopes to ________.
A.control the conversationB.appear knowledgeable
C.learn about the bookD.make more friends
