【題目】 Have you ever thought about how much water you use in a day?

Starting February 1st, each person in Cape Town, South Africa received a daily supply of 13 .2 gallons of water which is only enough for a 10 ---minute shower! This restriction (限制) was introduced in preparation for April 22nd, also known as Day Zero, on which the city will turn off all municipal (市政) water taps because of the overuse of fresh water these years.

Over the past three years, Cape Town has suffered from a dangerous drought (干旱). That, along with a growing population of four million people, has caused water---supply drop strongly. As of November 2017, the water level in their largest water reservoir (水庫(kù)) had dropped to 28% from 102.9% in 2014. That amount is expected to come down to 13 .5% by April 22, 2018.What's worse, the last 10% of the reservoir's levels are not potable (safe to drink) because of the dirt at the bottom.

Firstly, researchers thought the cause of the drought was El Nio. Cape Town could become the first ever major city to run out of water. The government has called on people to conserve the little water they have left by way of prevention, including stopping car washing and filling up swimming pools. They are asking the public to cut showers to two minutes and reuse bathing water to flush the toilet.

When Cape Town reaches Day Zero, there will be 200 water stations scattered(分布) across the town for people to receive their daily supply of 6.6 gallons. Armed guards will stand by to make sure there is no violence(暴力沖突) or theft.

The water shortage has already influenced all parts of Cape Town. People's lives are being affected, with those in the tourism industry and businesses like car washing, seeing no chance to make a living. The relationship between people also becomes worse as neighbors are encouraged to report each other for water waste and the government plans to collect a drought tax(稅收) as they are losing tax money because of the low water use.

【題目】 One day a snake was looking for food. She found a hole and went into it. “Hooray!” It was a house for mice. She said to herself happily. There, she saw some little babies of mice. “They are good dinner for me!”

She came to them and asked, “Where are your parents?” The babies answered, “They went out for food.” “Food? Good!” said the snake. “Come on and listen to me. I came here to see your parents and tell them not to steal the people’s grain any longer or I will kill you all.” The little mice worried about their own safety. “Don’t be afraid, my body is like the hole. It is a safe place. When I open my mouth, you can come into it one by one. Then we will wait for your parents coming back. A moment later, the mice’s parents came back with some grain. Just then they found a snake in their room. “Who are you? Why did you come into our house?” “Where are our babies?” asked the mice’s parents. The snake answered coolly, “I am a judge of the people. I knew you did a lot of bad deeds. 【題目】 A new rubbish sorting system(垃圾分類系統(tǒng)) has been put into use in Fangchengyuan Community in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes(二維碼) on it.

"When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money," one of the local people told reporters. "It's really creative and encouraging."

This smart system has been carried out in 350 communities in Beijing. The capital of China has joined a list of cities in the country that take action to support rubbish sorting. For example, Shenzhen and Shanghai have made laws to punish people and organization for not sorting rubbish correctly.

China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried(填埋) in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills(填埋場(chǎng)) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.

What's more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits(經(jīng)濟(jì)利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused to make about 850 kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have developed successful sorting systems.

Japan has a strict and detailed system. When people throw away a water bottle, the cap, the wrapper(包裝紙) and the bottle itself have to go into three different bins. Every year, families receive special rubbish sorting timetables and directions from their local governments. They are advised to follow the timetables and directions when they throw away rubbish.

In Australia, every family is provided with three rubbish bins — the red lid(蓋子) bin for "general waste" like food and plastic bags, the yellow lid bin for "recycling" like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for "green waste" such as grass and leaves. On the streets, the bins are printed with pictures of the things that are allowed inside. It makes recycling quite easy.

1What will local people probably get if they put daily rubbish into the new system in Fangchengyuan Community?

A. A computer.B. A car.C. A lot of money.D. Some small gifts.

2Which of the following is NOT the consequence(后果) of burying rubbish?

A. Polluting soil.B. Polluting water.C. Taking up a lot of land.D. Saving resources.

3In Australia, which bin should you put food left after dinner in?

A. The red lid bin.B. The yellow lid bin.

C. The green lid bin.D. The black lid bin.

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. In Australia, the green lid bin is used for all kinds of recyclable(可回收的) wastes.

B. In Japan, all kinds of things for recycling are printed on rubbish bins.

C. Japanese people cannot throw a bottle into a bin unless they move away the wrapper first.

D. Australian people have to obey local timetables and directions to throw away rubbish strictly.
