Have you ever heard of “a ball of energy”? People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about an invention called the socket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the socket is a portable generator.
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the socket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University. There are mechanisms in a socket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment.
Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger so that they can get energy from it. For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the socket can provide enough electricity for an LED lamp for three hours, and the ball can store up to 24 hours’ electricity.
The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in really areas. There’s an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don't have any electricity, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of any electricity are harmful choices like kerosene lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.
Julia Silverman says the socket ball is one small solution to a big problem. Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their socket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.

根據(jù)“But today we tell about an invention called the socket, that is a real soccer ball of energy.”
difficulty困難;safety安全;success成功;sadness傷心;根據(jù)“One out of every five people in the world don't have any electricity”可知世界上每五個人中就有一個沒有電,推出前句應是說不好的事情,即世界存在著能源危機,該單詞意思是與選項A相近,故選A。
根據(jù)“There’s an energy crisis in the world.”及“Julia Silverman says the socket ball is one small solution to a big problem. Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their socket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages.”
根據(jù)第一段“But today we tell about an invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy”聯(lián)系全文內(nèi)容可知本文就是介紹了一種叫做soccket的能夠提供能量的足球的情況,故選A。

It's said that the longest living tree is about 3, 000 years old, almost as old as the city itself. Nearly half of the old trees are in old streets and ancient gardens.

Yang Shutian, director of the project, said that old trees could be seen as"living relics(遺跡)”and keeping them healthy was also part of the work to protect and carry forward the city's history.
A group of tree experts carried out an examination of the four old trees, which were very weak and dying. The experts soon took action to save the trees. They filled holes, controlled pests and watered the trees over the next two months. The trees are now very strong. According to Yang, more old trees in the city will be protected through the project.

It's 4:54 a. m. on a November morning in 2016 in Yosemite National Park, the United States. The moon shone over the south-west face of El Capitan. Alex Honnold was alone. He held on tightly to the rock with nothing but the tips of his fingers and two thin edges of shoe rubber. He was trying to do something that had been considered impossible-a "free solo" (徒手攀巖) up the world's most dangerous cliff.
Some people think free soloing is a meaningless sport. The sport, they say, has claimed the lives of many professional climbers. Others think mastering a mountain with only excellent physical and mental skill is the essence of climbing. Such was the attitude of Paul Preuss. Preuss was the father of free soloing. By the age of 27, he had made about 150 ropeless climbs He was admired (欽佩) throughout Europe. Then, on October 3,1913, he fell to his death while free soloing a cliff in the Alps
But Preuss's ideas lived on. They have influenced generations of climbers. In the 1960s, the "free climbing" movement was born. The movement supports using ropes and other gears (設備) but only as safety devices. The next serious free soloist appeared in 1973. Henry Barber climbed a 460-meter-tall rock in Yosemite without a rope. In 1987, Peter Croft, a Canadian, free soloed two of Yosemite's most dangerous routes in one day.
Croft's achievement stood until 2007. That year, 22-year-old Honnold showed up in Yosemite. He surprised the world by repeating Croft's masterpiece. The next year, he free soloed two famously difficult routes in America. The routes were so dangerous that no one had imagined they could be climbed without a rope.
Now, as fans celebrate his achievements, Honnold is preparing for his next big goal. Thousands of moves are still to come. Honnold is on his way to completing the greatest rock climb in history.
【1】How many ropeless climbs had Paul Preuss made by the age of 27? _______.
【2】On October 3,1931, Preuss _______.
【3】The "free climbing" movement was born _______.
【4】Alex Honnold repeated Peter Croft's masterpiece _______.
【5】Now, Honoold is on his way to _______.
