【題目】When I was 5 years old,I went to the USA with my mom. I can still remember the first Halloween holiday I had in the USA.

On the morning of Halloween,we paid a visit to a pumpkin(南瓜) farm. Each of us brought a pumpkin to school with us. I used the pumpkin to make a lantern which had two triangle eyes and a scary mouth.

In the afternoon,we put on the Halloween costumes and went on parade in school. Some of the costumes were nice, but some of them looked scary. I chose to wear a suit of Superman's clothes.

I did a lot of things that day,but the part I liked best was “trick or treat” in the evening. After dinner,I went outside with an empty bag. I hoped to get a lot of candies from people. At first,I was a bit nervous,so when I knocked at the door,my heart was beating very fast. A lady came out,and I said carefully to her,“Trick or treat.” My voice was very low,and even myself could hardly hear it. To my surprise, the lady was so kind to give me two candy bars, and I was so excited, thanked the lady and moved on. I couldn't remember how many houses I visited, but I could remember how many candies I got — I got 91 pieces of candy that day,and I was so proud of myself.

What a happy Halloween I had!And I wish we could have a Halloween every month!

【題目】Bai Yansong, a famous TV host, expressed his support for students wearing green scarves (領(lǐng)巾) at a primary school in Xi’an. He wore a green tie on a TV program on October 19, 2011.

“I just want the students to know that I’m also wearing a green one. And we are all great people and are as good as those wearing red scarves,” he said.

The First Experimental Primary School in Xi’an made children with poor schoolwork and behaviour wear green scarves. Parents were angry. “The punish-ment is too bad. All children need their self-esteem (自尊) even though they are very young, and they know the green scarf means something is not quite right. It does harm to students’ self-esteem,” said one mother.

Educational expert (專家) Li Zhenxi said that school students have strong self-esteem. They hope to be respected (尊重) and understood. Punishment will hurt them. “It’s better to encourage them rather than call them ‘bad’ students,” he said. Now, the school has stopped the practice.

Some schools think more of students’ self-esteem and have done better in protecting students’ privacy

(隱私) and encouraging them. In American schools, teachers post test results on the wall. Instead of using students’ names, they use secret numbers. This way, students know their secret numbers and can check their own grades only. Many teachers in China tell students their grades by sending text messages to their students.

Schools and teachers are doing more for students’ self-esteem. But it is a long way. Both teachers and parents should realize that test scores are not the only measure (標(biāo)準(zhǔn)) of a student’s ability. Everyone has his own strengths and everyone can make great progress by working hard. Adults should make students get to know their own value. The most important is to make students believe in themselves.

【題目】Next time you hear yourself wishing for something better in your life, remember the word “SMART”. When you’ve decided to take action, read the following first.

S is for specific (具體的): For example, instead of setting a goal (目標(biāo)): of “I want to lose weight”, set yourself a specific goal like “I want to lose five kilograms”. If you want to climb a high mountain, start your research, set a date and train for the climbing fitness.

M is for measurable (可測量的): Don’t try to “become healthy”, instead, set a goal that can be measured while carrying out an improved eating, exercise or lifestyle plan. For example, try to go to the gym for an hour three times a week, to visit your grandma once a week for an evening meal, or to eat no more than 200 grams of chocolate a week.

A is for achievable(可完成的): If you’ve never exercised in your life, don’t try to take part in the 2020 Olympics. Rather, get walking with a specific goal of how many steps to take a day. No need to try for the stars—baby steps are good.

R is for relevant (恰當(dāng)?shù)?/span>): Many of us choose goals that seem right, but are in fact wrong. They may go on for a few weeks before they fail. Try to avoid making the same mistake—rather choose goals that really speak to you.

T is for time-conscious (心中有數(shù)的): Finally, be very clear in your mind about how much time you are giving yourself to achieve the goal. That way, you know when you’ve succeeded, failed or whether you need to work harder to finish it before the last day.

C. set a goal??? D. spend time.
