【題目】 Architects(建筑師) have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical basis(實證依據). They are discovering how to design spaces that develop creativity, keep people focused, and lead to relaxation.

Researches show that the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. Her research suggests that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.

In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence the owner’s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.

Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically(學術地), and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms mainly overlooked roads and parking lots.

Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.

So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. “We have a very limited number of studies, so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw(吸管),” architect David Allison says. “How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That’s what we’re all struggling with.”

1What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research?

A. The height of the ceiling.B. The freedom of people.

C. The outlook of environment.D. The shape of the furniture.

2What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?

A. The classroom with roads around can be filled with more students.

B. The students in large classrooms can pay more attention on maths.

C. The views outside the window may affect the students’ grades.

D. The researchers in the University of Georgia may get higher scores.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A. Test standards may encourage people to search more.

B. Students in a bright classroom may feel more relaxed.

C. Children in greenness may improve their grades quickly.

D. Room designs may influence people’s work and feelings.

【題目】 Friendships can be difficult because often people aren’t as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people finally get hurt.

Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should be against.

The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friends the same way that you’d like to be treated (對待). This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friends everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes.

Even if you’re al ways thinking about how you’d like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are problems that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these problems so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Problems like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are problems that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these friend problems so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship.

1This passage mainly talks about ________.

A. the importance of friendships

B. the advantages of friendships

C. the problems of friendships

D. the disadvantages of friendships

A. to treat your friends as you like to be treated

B. to give your friends whatever you have

D. not to think of your own need any more

4What’s the purpose of understanding how to deal with friendship problems?

A. To have a comfortable life.

B. To build stronger and healthier friendships.

C. To be treated the way you want.

D. To get a boyfriend or girlfriend more quickly.

5Where can this article be taken from?

A. A novel.B. A poster.C. A magazine.D. A report.

【題目】 In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo— a joyous zoo. Not surprising. I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember little steps add up to big dreams.

1When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________.

A. a writerB. a teacherC. a judgeD. a doctor

2The underlined expression “withdraw from college” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.

A. quit collegeB. graduate from college

C. start collegeD. leave for college

3Why did the author withdraw from school in her second year of college?

A. She wanted to study by herself.

B. She fell in love and got married.

C. She suffered from a serious illness

D. She decided to look after her grandma.

4What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Failure is the mother of success.B. Little by little, one goes far.

C. Every coin has two sides.D. Well begun, half done.

5Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Caring and determined.B. Honest and responsible.

C. Ambitious and sensitive.D. Innocent and single-minded.
