【題目】 This year, the world celebrates the anniversary of the birth of a great US author, J.D. Salinger (1919- 2010). Salinger was one of the most influential authors of the last century. His writing is popular among all age groups, young people are especially big fans of his.

The reason he has such a following is due to his novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951《麥田里的守望者》). The hero and narrator(敘述人) of this story is named Holden Caulfield. Holden is a troublemaker at school and has difficulty getting on with others, whether they are adults or people his own age.

However, Holden has a heart of gold. Many readers have been moved by the protective attitude he has toward young children, especially to his little sister Phoebe. Millions of people all over the world have taken the troubled 17-year-old Holden into their hearts.

Salinger didn’t actually write all that much over the course of his life. Apart from The Catcher in the Rye, he published a few other shorter works, and after 1965, nothing at all. The reason for this seems to be that he hated publicity (公眾的注意). He had become famous with the success of his novel and didn’t care for the fame. He refused to give interviews and did not allow anyone to write his biography. He came to hate publicity so much that he stopped publishing his writing altogether.

But Salinger still kept on writing. It’s said that he wrote eight other novels. Fans of his work hope that one day they will be able to read these “l(fā)ost” Salinger books.

【題目】(A)根據(jù)短文回答問題。

Rachel Beckwith is a little girl. For her 9th birthday, she didn’t ask for toys, dolls or a new pair of shoes. Instead, she made a selfless(無私的)wish: She wanted her friends and family to donate money to the charity for water, so that people in developing countries could have clean drinking water.

“On June 12th,2011,I’m turning 9,” she wrote on her fundraising(募捐)page. “I found that millions of people don’t live to see their 5th birthday. And why? Because they didn’t have clean or safe water, so I’m celebrating my birthday like never before. I’m asking everyone I know to donate instead of buying gifts for my birthday.”

Rachel’s goal amount was $300,but she only raised $220 from her friends and family. That didn’t bother her much, though—she thought she could raise more the following year. Unluckily, that’s not to be: Rachel was a passenger in one of the 14 cars involved(牽涉)in a highway accident. After spending several days in a hospital, she closed her eyes on Saturday. The news of her death became known, and so did the story of her fundraising wish. Now, Rachel’s fundraising page has received donations from more than four thousand people, over $84,000.All of that money will go towards building wells in developing countries.

1When was Rachel born?

【題目】 Devon Toomey had been on a website for an internation adoption many times and seen so many kids, but she’d never determined to email the agency about anyone until she came across a photo. It was a baby born without arms and legs. “on seeing him, I just knew he was the right one. There was just something that spoke to me,” she says.

Today, four years later, that boy, named Bowen Toomey, is a 5-year-old kindergartner with two older brothers living in Eagle, Idaho. He is keen on going to school, jumping on trampolines(蹦床), reading books and applying himself to difficult tasks.

But his physical disability means he can’t live normally like others: Where other children use their hands to handle things, Bowen sometimes uses his mouth or a special band he wears that lets him deal with things like a spoon.

“He does everything any other kids do: he just finds his way to solve different problems. He can ride his skate already,” his mother says. “He particularly loves to swim, and can dive and swim independently. I think he loves it so much because the water is the place where he really doesn’t have limitations限制.”

A former special education teacher, Toomey and her husband, Jeremy, knew they wanted to adopt. Nine months after she discovered Bowen on the website of a Serbian orphanage(孤兒院), located in Belgrade, the entire family went there to take home their 18-month-old addition.

Although Bowen had been well taken care of at the orphanage, he didn’t get much attention, and for the most part he was just laid in the bed.

The young boy responsed to his new family in a way that he surprised everyone. “We laid eyes on him and from that moment on, he became joyful, which really touched our hearts,” she says, “I said to myself, ‘it is no wonder that I wanted him the moment I saw him’. He is my child.”

1How many children are there in Doven’s family?

A. twoB. threeC. fourD. five

2What can we know about Bowen Toomey?

A. he can’t go to school and read books because of his physical disability

B. He was once badly treated at the orphanage.

C. Only under the water can he enjoy freedom

D. He keeps challenging his own limits in life

3The underlined words”their 18-month-old addition” refers to

A. Devon’s newborn kidB. another healthy orphan

C. BowenD. one of Bowen’s brother

4What can we infer from the passage?

A. Devon adopted Bowen because she was touched by his bravery

B. Bowen can hardly deal with things that need hands

C. Bowen has often lain in bed since he came to the new family

D. The boy’s arrival has brought the family surprises and happiness

5The best title:_______________.
