【題目】 Do your parents ever try to limit how much soda(蘇打)you drink? They say drinking too much isn’t good for you, right? Now, in New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg also limits how much soda you can have—and it is not only for you but also for adults!
Starting in March, 2013, places like movie theaters, restaurants and sports centers, can’t sell sodas larger than 473 ml. Sellers who break the ban(禁令)will face a $200 fine. But you can still get whatever size you want at supermarkets.
Mayor Bloomberg says it will help people keep healthy. In New York, more than half of adults and nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese(肥胖的). Obesity kills thousands of New Yorkers every year and the city spends as much as $4 billion a year on medical care for overweight and obese people.
New York has a population of about 8 million. Of course it’s impossible for all New Yorkers to agree on the ban. There are different opinions(意見(jiàn)). Keith Aiken believes the ban can help fight teen obesity. “Clearly, soda causes teen obesity. We have to do something,” he says. Chuck Kallenbach doesn’t think the ban can work. He says, “I can’t buy a large cup of soda, but I can buy two small cups.” Michael Tansini says, “Whatever size cup I want is my own business. No one should limit it!”

【題目】 Coffee is a necessary part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I have definitely drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK, but coffee culture in Italy is a completely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a cafe or a bar, you are presented with a tiny, bitter espresso(蒸餾咖啡). This is “normal coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK. In addition, while takeaway coffee is extremely popular among Englishmen, it is not very common at all in Italy, especially in nontouristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.
Typically, breakfast at a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry(油酥糕點(diǎn)). I have been spoiled for choice with lovely cafes in the Italian town I'm living in. These cafes sell a series of mouthwatering pastries—either plain or filled with cream, chocolate, jam or Nutella—as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a pastry is the perfect way to start the day. I think it's a nice way to head to bar to buy a coffee and a pastry for breakfast before working and it's relaxing to take more time to enjoy such breakfast at the weekend.
Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. Of course, this means that in Italy, it is possible to go out for coffee regularly without breaking the bank.
【1】Which of the following do Italians like better?
A.Takeaway coffees.
B.Huge coffees.
C.Creamy coffees.
D.Tiny, bitter coffees.
【2】What does the word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Italians.B.Britons.
C.Coffees.D.Cafes.
【3】What does the writer usually do when in Italy?
A.Sell tiny coffees to Italians.
B.Travel in touristy areas.
C.Enjoy a coffee with a pastry.
D.Break the bank regularly.
【4】Why can the writer often go out for coffee without breaking the bank in Italy?
A.Because coffee is a part of Italian culture.
B.Because there are so many cafes or bars.
C.Because Italian pastries are very delicious.
D.Because Italian coffee is very cheap.

One of the most powerful tools you can use to improve your reading comprehension is mind mapping. It is possible to create maps by simply using a pen and paper.
The first step is to draw a circle or box at the center of the page. Inside your shape write down the main idea that your mind map will focus upon. For example, if you were creating a mind map about the geography of the United States, then you would write down “the geography of the United States” in the middle of your page inside your circle.
Next you draw branches from your central idea. Much like a tree grows branches. Simply draw a line moving away from the central theme. In the case of the geography of the United States, you would probably draw 50 lines. Each line represents one of 50 states. These are the main categories(分類(lèi)) with your primary concept(概念).
Each of lines can then have branches off of each. These would represent the main example under each category. For example, under the line titled, “Texas,” you would find lines called Austin, Houston, and Dallas, you might draw a series of lines to represent some of its main sections like “South Dallas” and “Highland Park”. You continue to draw your mind map much like the structure of branches on a tree.
Mind map helps improve your comprehension because they enable you to quickly see relationships between main ideas, categories, examples, and details that might otherwise be missed if you use more traditional note taking strategies(策略).

It’s almost time for Science Night. I need a partner who should I ask? I have three friends who all want to help, How can I choose just one for the task? My best friend Jule is fun to be around. But she’s as chatty as a bird. When she starts to talk-just watch out! I can’t get in a single word. Still, that might work for Science Night; She’d show our project to the crowd. Jule’s voice would boom out like a drum I wouldn’t mind if she were extra loud! And then there s Dan, who s really shy But wise as an owl- he’s so smart? He’d help with the thinking for the job. He wouldn’t talk, but he’d do his part. | But what about Shel, who s good at art? He paints and draws and sculpts so well. Our project would look great no doubt! I m sure I should be asking Shel. How can I choose just one from three? I need them all! l’ m feeling sick. I’ m as dizzy as a spinning top. When trying to choose I just can’t pick! But wait—why not ask them all to help? A group of four is better than one. I’d love to work with all my friends. In such a group, wed have such fun! The work could be shared by four of us. Be me and Shel and Dan and Jule. We’d fit together like puzzle pieces. And take the grand prize in the school! |
