About the year 1900, Charlie Chaplin (卓別林) was often seen waiting outside the back entrances of London theaters. He looked neither tall nor short. He was hoping to get work in show business. Luckily, he soon got a chance to act and it was also his first performance on the stage.
But twenty years later, this same Chaplin became the greatest, best-known comedian (喜劇演員) in the world. Any regular visitor to the cinema must have seen some of Charlie Chaplin’s films. People everywhere have laughed at them until tears have run down their faces. Even people who don’t understand English can enjoy Chaplin’s films because they mostly have no sound. It isn’t what he says that makes us laugh. It is based on little actions which mean the same thing to people all over the world.
Chaplin lived most of his life in America and died in Switzerland on Christmas Day in 1977, at the age of eighty-eight. There was sadness all over the world at the news of his death.

When I was young, I always wanted a cat. But my parents disagreed. Every year I would ask for a cat, but I always got the same answer, “No.” My father said, “Cats are dirty and smell terrible.” Then it was my mom’s turn, “65. 我認(rèn)為我們照顧不了貓。”

After a long time, Bandit was able to successfully mix in my family. I had prepared a lot of plans for Bandit and me. I wanted to paint pictures of us, go on road trips and dress up in fashionable clothes together. 67. 令我驚訝的是,Bandit是我曾見過的最害羞的貓。He hated joining me and I often shouted at him.
Later he became closer to my mom. 68. In my opinion, nobody loved him more than I did. However, he loved my mom more. I asked my mom why. “What I do have is patience,” Mom told me. 69. Ever since then, Bandit has been teaching me to be more patient. Because of him, I became more responsible, too.

【題目】Larry and Jo Ann were an ordinary couple. Like any other couple, they made efforts to make ends meet (收支相抵) and do the right thing for their children. They often argued about what was wrong with their marriage and who was to blame (責(zé)備). They wanted to make changes.
“You know, Jo Ann, I’ve got a magic chest (衣柜) of drawers. Every time I open them, they’re full of clean clothes,” Larry said. “I want to thank you for filling them all these years.”
Jo Ann stared at her husband and felt strange. This wasn’t the first time Larry had done something strange recently, so Jo Ann forgot it quickly. But it happened again a few days later.
“Jo Ann, that was a great dinner,” Larry said one evening. “I appreciate all you have done in the past 15 years. You have cooked lots of delicious food for me and the kids.”
Jo Ann was growing worried. “What’s wrong with my husband?” she wondered.
Day in and day out, Larry continued his praise.
Over the weeks, Jo Ann grew more used to her husband’s unusual behavior. Her step was now a little lighter and she didn’t seem to get upset as often.
Larry has never told Jo Ann the reason for his change in behavior. So it will likely remain one of life’s mysteries. But it’s one I’m thankful to live with.
You see, I am Jo Ann.

Hi there!
Can you help me? I’m doing a project at school. The title?‘Will life be better in 2100?’What do you think? Thanks you for your ideas!
Josh
a. Hi Josh! I think life will be great. People will live in‘smart houses’. A central computer will control the temperature, the lights, everything! These houses will be ecological and use solar energy and recycled water. A‘smart’mirror in the bathroom(that's right, it’s a mirror with a computer!)will check your health. And guess what? Robots will cook and do the housework.
Maya
b. Pollution is a big problem today, but will be a bigger problem in 100 years. So people won’t use cars with petrol. They will drive in electric cars on underground roads. And there will be electric buses with computers for drivers! The best thing? People will be able to travel in time. Now that will be exciting!
Rosie
c. Hi Josh. Life will be better in 2100-in space! People will live on the Moon and Mars in special cities. They will grow food and send it to the Earth in a huge space craft. Space stations will orbit the Earth and control the climate. There will also be holidays in space! How cool is that?
Brandon
d. Will life be different in 100 years? Yes, it will. Will life be better? No, it won’t! Climate change will cause floods and droughts. Rich people will live for a long time, maybe 200 years! But life won’t be easy for most people. They won’t have food and water.
Faith
e. Well, Josh, the good news is… there won’t be any schools! Students will have lessons at home on their computers. They’ll be in contact with other students all over the world in a‘virtual’classroom. The bad news is…teachers will still give us homework in the future!
