Jamie Oliver is one of the Britain’s most talented and successful chefs (廚師). He has always had a passion for food and cooking.1This is where he learned much of what he knows today. However it wasn’t until later, while working at the well-known River Café, that he was discovered by people working in television. At just 21, Jamie became famous with his first series television programs that have been shown all over the world.2A lot for someone so young to achieve!

GIVING BACK

As his success grew, Jamie needed a new challenge. He wanted to “give something back” to the cooking business. 3Many of the young people who came to work there hadn’t done so well at school or had problems finding work, so this was like a second chance for them.
TARGETING SCHOOL FOOD

Realizing that he could create real, positive change through food and cooking, Jamie turned his attention to the food given to British children at school. 4He knew things needed to change. Understanding the power of television, Jamie based himself in a school cafeteria and proved that with hard work, change was possible. Jamie’sSchoolDinnerswas again shown all over the world.

GETTING BACK TO BASICS

Jamie also decided to make a difference in people’s homes.5In 2010, he also developed a new qualification (資格), “Jamie’s Home Cooking Skills”, which is offered in high schools around the UK and teaches children practical cooking skills and basic food knowledge.

【題目】 Traveling is not always happy, at least for the buddies in the movie Green Book. The popular film won Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards on Feb 25.

The movie was adapted from the true story of a road trip through the southern US in the early 1960s.

In the film, the black pianist Don Shirley hires Italian-American Tony Vallelonga to drive him to performances, but they face problems because of Shirley’s skin color. These problems lead them to form a special friendship.

“There’s something so deeply right about this movie, so true to the time,” wrote US film critic Mick LaSalle. The time LaSalle is talking about was between late 1870s and 1960s, a very different period in US history. Many parts of the country had Jim Crow laws (《吉姆·克勞法》), which allowed racial segregation (種族隔離). These laws made life and travel 39 for African-Americans. They couldn’t use certain hotels, restaurants, or even gas stations. They had to be indoors after sunset or they might be put into prison. Even black celebrities (名人) had to follow the laws.

But in 1936, a black mail carrier named Victor H. Green had an idea. He made a list of friendly businesses in New York City. He published the list as a small book with a green cover. The Green Book helped African-Americans travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow laws went away. The book went away, too.

Today many US people still remember the time of Jim Crow. But they probably don’t know about The Green Book. It’s a forgotten part of the story. Thanks to this movie, maybe people can remember it again.
