【題目】 Flights are often canceled for many different reasons, including snow, clouds, or even a bird getting caught in an airplane’s engine (發(fā)動機(jī)). But you’d never think that too much sunshine would stop a plane from taking off.

Unluckily for passengers in Phoenix, US this summer, their travel plans went dead when more than 40 flights in and out of the local airport were cancelled after temperatures went as high as 48°C. This is the highest temperature that many smaller planes are allowed to fly at.

So what is it that makes flying in great heat so dangerous? The answer lies in how “thick”, the air is.

“As air warms up, it expands (膨脹), and there’s fewer molecules (分子) under your wings,” Lou McNally, a professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US, told the Associated Press (AP).

When the temperature is high and the air becomes thin, “you need more of everything. You need more thrust (推力) to take off. You need more distance to take off. You need more distance to land. It gets to a point for some aircraft that it gets just too much,” McNally explained.

The US’ Southwest, where Phoenix is located, is experiencing an unexpectedly hot summer. This June was its third-hottest on record. According to The Guardian, up to 10 people are thought to have died as a result of the hot weather.

The unexpected heat attacked airlines(航空公司) too, causing them to cancel all flights running on smaller planes for the safety of their passengers.

But what about cities whose temperatures are high every summer?

Many airlines in hot Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates make many flights at night or in the early morning to avoid the problem of thin air, according to AP. They also mainly use larger planes, which are able to fly in greater heat than smaller planes.

After the temperature in Phoenix continued to climb over 40°C all through the rest of the summer, maybe now would be a good time for airlines to buy bigger planes in time for next year’s heat wave.

1When the weather is too hot, ______.

A.planes are more likely to break down

B.planes need more power and distance to take off

C.there is much more air under the wings of a plane

D.it takes less time for planes to take off and land

2How do airlines in Gulf countries deal with high temperatures?

A.They make many flights at midday.

B.They mainly use small planes.

C.They build long runways for planes.

D.They make fewer flights at midday.

3What’s the article mainly about?

A.Flight accidents caused by great heat.

B.Perfect flying conditions for aircraft.

C.How dangerous the flights are in hot weather.

D.How hot weather influences flights.

文章主要說明了溫度影響飛行的原因,以及高溫地區(qū)如何解決這一問題。

1細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)“When the temperature is high and the air becomes thin, “you need more of everything. You need more thrust (推力)to take off. You need more distance to take off.”可知,高溫時需要更多推力,更長的距離來起飛。故選B。

2細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)“Many airlines in hot Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates make many flights at night or in the early morning to avoid the problem of thin air”可知,為避免高溫,海灣國家航班更多在夜里或清晨,減少中午的飛行次數(shù)。故選D。

3主旨大意題。根據(jù)第一段“But you’d never think that too much sunshine would stop a plane from taking off.”可知,文章主要說明高溫如何影響飛機(jī)飛行。故選D。

【題目】 In the summer of 2015, Christian Moyer was just another teenager busy preparing for the SAT when he was faced with a question that he couldn’t answer. It had nothing to do with reading, writing or math. Anyhow, it has everything to do with life.

“We were looking at this part about the college writing, and one of the ideas was, ‘Tell us about a difficult situation you have had in life and how you got it over,”’ said Christian, now a 17-year-old student at University City High School. “And I realized how lucky I was not to have any problems in life.”

That is when the answer came through loud and clear. The idea for what to do next came from “Barefoot(光腳) Sunday”, a church event that asks members to wear new or gently used shoes to a service and leave them behind. The shoes are then donated(捐贈) to the charity that help people start over - people who are homeless and poor. Christian decided to start collecting shoes for the San Diego Rescue Mission, one of the “Barefoot Sunday” charities.

Then Christian got a tour to the downtown, there he saw some people would wear the same pair of shoes until there were no bottoms or tops on them. He thought what he did would really make a big difference for them.

Christians started collecting shoes last fall. He hit up friends, neighbors and family members for donations. He posted a note on an online social network. His family members put a box in front of their house for easy drop-off. Since starting his shoe drive, Christian has collected 160 pairs. Donating and collecting shoes have given him the kind of feel-good payback.

“Most people are pretty happy to give,” Christians said. “It’s nice because it makes them realize how many shoes they have that they don’t wear, and it probably makes them feel as good as it makes me feel.”

1Christian couldn’t answer the question because ____.

A.It was all about the school subjects.

B.It was a difficult SAT writing topic.

C.It needed some special writing skills.

D.It was something he had never experienced.

2The right order of the following is ____.

① His family members helped him to collect shoes in many ways.

② Christian couldn’t answer one question when preparing for the SAT.

③ The idea about what to do and how to do it came to Christian.

④ Christian got a tour to the downtown and was shocked by what he saw.

A.③①②④B.③②④①C.②①④③D.②③④①

3It can be inferred from the passage that Christian is a(n) ____ teenager.

A.braveB.politeC.kindD.honest.

4What’s the best title for this passage?

A.Giving shoes to poor makes a difference

B.Preparing for the exam is difficult

C.Enjoying a tour or to the downtown may help

D.Making shoes for everyone is helpful

【題目】 Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from_____ home and running in the open air. _____, a new study shows _____the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather _____improve one’s performance(身體機(jī)能). Many people say running in _______ winter is difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and strong winds. Yet many runners might find _____easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is _____than in warmer conditions. Besides, the body needs less water _______a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from John Brewer, a _______ scientist at St. Mary’s University in London. Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat _____by sweating, and that the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin. But sweating puts much strain(張力)on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it is______ harder to lose heat when the external environment is warm ______. In addition, running in higher temperatures results in faster heart rates. Scientists find that heart rates are about 6 percent higher in the hotter conditions. However, running in cooler temperatures has ______advantages. One is that the body does not have to work so hard to pump blood to the skin surface in cooler temperatures, which means running requires less energy. Several websites note that the most important thing for people ________run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. And especially, keeping as dry as possible is very important ____________ exercising in low temperatures.
